It is diving deep into the deep waters of the ocean. You will have to carry the equipments and oxygen for for staying deep. Further and most important is that you have follow strict procedures, since under pressure you body will take in nytrogen, which wil have to be released slowly for which you have to stay in water for specific periods of time ar specified deapths. If one comes out from the deep all of a sudden, all the absorbed nytrogen will be released immediately and it is a sure very painful sudden death. So first get proper training, then under the strict supervision of the instructor, practice.

Scuba diving is diving witht he use of a self conatined underwater breathing aparatus, or sometime called aqualung. An aqualung is basically one or two steel or aluminum tanks filled with compressed air. To scuba dive, one basically needs a tank, air, a regulator, and a working tank valve. Other nifty devices come in handy, and taking a course or class would help.

Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus
there's two types on open circuit and a closed circuit, usually called a rebreather. the cheapest is open circuit; it can be one or two tanks and some hoses and can be rented at your local marina or some water sports type store.

Scuba is an acronym for
Self
Contained
Underwater
Breathing
Apparatus

You need an air tank with a regulator. You should have some device for monitoring your air supply, normally just a wrist-watch with a timer, telling you how much time you have left (estimated, based upon average consumption). If you're doing something strenuous down there, you'll burn through the oxygen more quickly.

You'll want swim-fins and goggles, and depending on the water temp, a full wetsuit to keep warm.

The first group is what is usually needed when taking a class:

--Mask
--Fins
--Boots
-- Snorkel

This group is what you'll need to scuba dive in addition to the first group:

--Wetsuit or Drysuit
--Regulator assembly (First stage, primary second stage, alternate second stage, pressure gauge, and low pressure inflator hose)
--Buoyancy Compensator Device
--Tank
--Weights
--Timing device or dive computer

Other accessories which are not really needed to dive, but start handling some "what if" situations:

--Underwater slate and pencil
--Surface signal devices (whistle, signal sausage, etc.)
--Hood and gloves
--Cutting device (like EMT shears, or line cutter, small knife)
--Reel/finger spool

For pricing, it depends on a few items:

For my warm water gear set it costs about $2,500-$3,000.
For my cold water gear set it costs about $6,000.

I am not familiar with the currency rate for UK, but I can give some ideas in dollars.
First, you need to get certified. This usually runs between $200 - $300 dollars, and should include your own snorkeling gear. After this, you'll know whether Scuba is for you.
Equipment varies greatly in price, but decent middle of the road (safe) gear should run near $1000 for regulator, BCD, weight set-up, guages, etc. From there you may decide to upgrade some more. (the sky is the limit.)
As for being a worthwhile hobby, this is my opinion. IT'S AWESOME! There is more beauty underwater than I've ever seen on the land.
The general rule for exploring reefs = Take Pictures, Leave Bubbles.
Good Luck, and Safe Diving!
THE POOL IS NOW OPEN!
